Rakeeragh is a townland of 137 acres in the Parish of Monaghan and in the Barony of Monaghan. Rakeeragh is situated about 2 miles from Monaghan Town close to Ardaghey. Some of the neighbouring townlands are Corness, Carrickanoran, Tanderageebrack and Tanderageebane.
The Irish spelling for Rakeeragh is Ráth Caorach, and the townland of Rakeeragh ( The Fort of the Sheep) got it's name from Ráth meaning ring-fort and Caora meaning sheep.

In about 1826 there were about 19 family farms in Rakeeragh according to the Tithe Applotments Records, in the Griffiths Valuations of 1848-1864 there were about 20 family farms in Rakeeragh.
In the 1901 Census there were 9 families with 44 people residing in Rakeeragh and the most popular family names were Creighan, Jackson, McKenna and McPhillips. All 9 houses had a thatch roof and most were constructed of stone or brick.
In the 1911 census there were 9 families with 48 people resident in Rakeeragh, 6 of the houses had a thatch roof and 3 had a slateor tin roof.
In the mid 1850's the Landlord of Rakeeragh was Lord Rossmore and all the residents leased their farms from him, the largest farm was just over 14 acres and was leased by Hugh McPhillips
