Mullinahinch

Mullinahinch is a townland of 139 acres in the Parish of Kilmore and in the Barony of Monaghan. Mullinahinch is situated about 2 miles from Monaghan Town just off the Scotstown Road. Some of the neighbouring townlands are Tullybryan, Kilnahaltar, Rosefield and Tullycroman. The Irish spelling for Mullinahinch is Mullaigh Na Hinse, and the townland of Mullinahinch got it's name from Mullaigh meaning Hilltop and Inch meaning island or river meadow. In about 1825 there were about 14 families residing in Mullinahinch according to the Tithe Applotments Records, in the Griffiths Valuations of 1848-1864 there were about 10 families residing in Mullinahinch. In the 1901 Census there were 4 families with 17 people residing in Mullinahinch and the most popular family names were McGuigian, McQuaid, Story and Temple. 1 houses had a thatch roof and 3 had either slate or a tin roof, and most were constructed of stone or brick. In the 1911 census there were 4 families with 18 people resident in Mullinahinch, 3 of the houses had a thatch roof and 1 had a slate or tin roof. In the mid 1850's the Landlord of Mullinahinch was Charles Hopes and all the residents leased their farms from him, the largest farm was just over 48 acres and was leased by John McAdam. In the 1901 and 1911 census there are a lot of residents with the same surnames but this doesn't automatically mean that they were related or live in the same house. |
