Corness

Corness is a townland of 99 acres in the Parish of Monaghan and in the Barony of Monaghan. Corness is situated about 2 miles from Monaghan Town close to Ardaghey. Some of the neighbouring townlands are Dunaldron, Ballymacforban, Bellanagall, Beagh Barton, and Rakeeragh. The Irish spelling for Corness is Chorr Aonghasa, and the townland of Corness got it's name from Corr meaning round hill, pointed hill or hollow. In about 1826 there were about 7 families residing in Corness according to the Tithe Applotments Records, in the Griffiths Valuations of 1848-1864 there were about 8 families residing in Corness. In the 1901 Census there were 6 families with 28 people residing in Corness and the most popular family names were Gilanders, Creighan, and Duffy. 3 houses had a thatch roof and 3 had either slate or a tin roof, and most were constructed of stone or brick. In the 1911 census there were 6 families with 18 people resident in Corness, 3 of the houses had a thatch roof and 3 had a slate or tin roof. In the mid 1850's the Landlord of Corness was Lord Rossmore and all the residents leased their farms from him, the largest farm was just over 25 acres and was leased by James Gillanders Jnr. In the 1901 and 1911 census there are a lot of residents with the same surnames but this doesn't automatically mean that they were related or live in the same house. |
