Carrickanoran is a townland of 133 acres in the Parish of Monaghan and in the Barony of Monaghan. Carrickanoran is situated about 2 miles from Monaghan Town close to Ardaghey. Some of the neighbouring townlands are Corness, Ramanny, Greaghglass, Crosses, Beagh Barton, Tanderageebrack and Rakeeragh.
The Irish spelling for Carrickanoran is Charraig an Fhuaráin, and the townland of Carrickanoran got it's name from Carraig meaning Rock.

In about 1826 there were about 20 family farms in Carrickanoran according to the Tithe Applotments Records, in the Griffiths Valuations of 1848-1864 there were about 16 family farms in Carrickanoran.
In the 1901 Census there were 10 families with 31 people residing in Carrickanoran and the most popular family names were Clerkin, Creighan, Corr, Duffy and McGrane. 8 houses had a thatch roof and 2 had either slate or a tin roof, and most were constructed of stone or brick.
In the 1911 census there were 10 families with 36 people resident in Carrickanoran, 9 of the houses had a thatch roof and 1 had a slate or tin roof.
In the mid 1850's the Landlord of Carrickanoran was Lord Cremorne and all the residents leased their farms from him, the largest farm was just over 21 acres and was leased by Francis Duffy.
In the 1901 and 1911 census there are a lot of residents with the same surnames but this doesn't automatically mean that they were related or live in the same house.
